Why Read e?
According to a study conducted by Greg Kozak for the University of Michigan Center for Sustainable Systems, paper books created 4 times the greenhouse gas emissions of an e-book reader and several times more ozone-depleting substances and chemicals associated with acid rain. Print books needed 3 times more raw materials and 78 times more water consumption than e-books, and emitted larger quantities of ozone depleting substances and acidification causing chemicals.
For some of us who love printed books, that’s like saying that breathing emits dangerous levels of CO2. It’s important. It matters. But what are some other good reasons to read ebooks? How about:
- ebooks cost less to produce and thus often cost the consumer less to buy.
- We like to think we’re saving the life of a tree (12 trees, actually, for every ton of book printing paper created).
- ebooks are more easily read by some handicapped readers, including the visually impaired.
- Instant gratification.
- Small storage requirements, allowing you to have a library at your fingertips.
eBooks come in a variety of formats suitable for different devices and different tastes in reading. The formats we offer include:
ePUB
ePUB is fast becoming the universal format for electronic books. Books in this format can be read on the iPhone and iTouch, and imported into Adobe Digital Editions, Mobipocket Reader, and read with the FBReader, which is compatible with:
- Linux
- Windows XP
- Mac OS X
- IRex iLiad
- Maemo (Nokia 770/N800/N810) Internet Tablet.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is primarily readable by any PDF viewer, including Adobe Digital Editions. It’s the format most like a paper book, with proper margins, pretty fonts, and can easily include pictures. It can be imported into most dedicated readers, though the formatting may be odd.
Mobipocket
Mobipocket format books can be read on the Mobipocket Reader and the Kindle. Mobipocket has a clean interface, allows you to set cleartype font size, and background and font colors, and may include pictures. Mobipocket Reader is compatible with:
- Windows PC
- Blackberry
- Windows Mobile
- Pocket PC
- Smart Phone
- Symbian OS
- Palm OS
- Cybook
- ILiad
Microsoft Reader
The Microsoft Reader has a clean interface, allows you to set cleartype font size, bookmark, add notes and highlight, and may include pictures. Microsoft Reader is compatible with Microsoft devices.
Sony
The Sony reader (BBeB format) uses e-ink technology and is a dedicated reading device. The format is proprietary, so Sony books can only be read on a Sony reader, but it can import ePUB, HTML, TXT, and PDF.
HTML
Our HTML formatted books are packaged in their own browser and can be read on any Windows compatible device. We use this particular format for ease of reading and to provide formatting and art as the book was meant to be seen.
Daisy
We are currently working to provide our catalog in Daisy format, which is a text-reader XML coded book for the vision impaired. It is not an audio book.
Audio Books
Many of our books are available as audio books from Audible.
Where to buy
Our books can be purchased directly from Drollerie Press, at the Mobipocket online store, at Amazon for the Kindle, at Fictionwise in most formats, at the Fictionwise Stanza store for the iPhone and iTouch, at Overdrive, and at their various affiliate sites.
